Choosing a countertop or commercial espresso machine

Pressure is a number, not a promise

Machines in this range are sold at 15 to 20 bar pump pressure. What matters in the cup is the pressure at the group, which the pump rating only partly describes: a machine with a stable group temperature and a consistent basket is more useful than a higher number on the box.

Read the model for what it physically has — pump type, boiler or thermoblock, group head, steam wand or automatic frother — and treat the bar figure as one data point among those.

Who the machine is for

A café counter, a hotel breakfast room, an office pantry and a home kitchen put different loads on the same machine. A busy counter needs recovery between shots and a steam wand that keeps up with milk; an office needs a routine one person can run without training; a home kitchen needs a footprint that fits.

The honest answer to "which one" depends on how many drinks an hour you expect and whether milk is part of the menu. Say both when you enquire and the shortlist gets much shorter.

  • Espresso only, or espresso with steamed milk
  • Semi-automatic with a steam wand, or bean-to-cup with a built-in grinder
  • Counter depth and height clearance under wall cabinets
  • Voltage and plug for the destination country

Power, water and the practical details

Check the rated power against the circuit you will plug into, the water tank capacity against how many drinks you make between refills, and whether the machine needs plumbed water or fills from a tank. These are the three reasons a machine gets returned, and all three are on the product page before you order.
