Somewhere for the tamper to land

A tamping mat is the cheapest thing on the bench and the one that stops the worktop getting dented. Food-grade silicone, moulded with a recess so the tamper sits square instead of rolling off, and soft enough that knocking a portafilter against it does not chip the basket lip. Shape matters more than size: a flat pad for a straight run of bench, an angled or cornered version to hug the edge of a worktop, and combination shapes that hold the tamper and the distribution tool at once — or the portafilter as well. Pick by the space you actually have, not by the largest pad on the page.
