Break the clumps before the tamper touches them
A distributor does the job a tamper cannot: it breaks up the clumps the grinder leaves behind and levels the bed before any pressure is applied. There are two families. Needle tools — WDT — drag fine needles through the dose and are the cheapest way to fix channelling. Rotary distributors press a bladed or three-leaf base into the bed and spin it flat. The difference between the ones on this page is mostly the mechanism: a plain handle you stir by hand, a one-way bearing that turns the head a full turn from one press and twist, or a fixed three-leaf base that levels at a set depth. All of them want the right diameter for the basket.
